Vintage vs modern booster packs: which era is worth opening
Every booster pack on PackLab belongs to an era, from the oldest vintage releases to the newest sets. Here is how the eras compare on pack price and range, straight from the live catalog.
The eras side by side
Figures cover sets that are open right now. Pack prices are in Sparks, our store credit (no cash value), with the dollar equivalent alongside.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Latest | 23 | 538 Sparks to 1,525 Sparks ($5.38 to $15.25) | 825 Sparks ($8.25) | 2023 to 2026 |

“Typical pack” is the median pack price across the era's open sets. Prices move with the market; each set page shows its current price and published odds.
What each era trades off
- Latest. The newest releases in the catalog. Prices for brand-new sets can move quickly while the market settles, and their chase cards are the ones collectors are hunting right now. Browse latest packs.
- Modern. Modern packs are usually the cheapest way in, and modern sets carry many illustration-rare and special-art chase cards, so there is more than one card to hope for in each set. Browse modern packs.
- Mid-era. The bridge between the classics and today: sealed product is older and less common than modern packs, so pack prices tend to sit between the two. Browse mid-era packs.
- Vintage. The oldest, most collectible booster releases. Sealed vintage packs are scarce and that scarcity is priced in, so packs cost more and the chase cards are fewer but iconic. Browse vintage packs.
Which era is worth opening?
There is no single right answer. If you want the most packs for your Sparks and lots of different chase cards, modern and latest sets are the usual pick. If you want a piece of card collecting history and do not mind paying more per pack, vintage is where the scarce sealed product lives. Mid-era sits in between.
Whatever you open, you are buying a sealed product at published odds and keeping the real cards you pull. Compare each set's rates on the odds page, and if pull rates are new to you, start with pack odds explained.
