What makes a trading card valuable

Two cards from the same booster pack can be worth a few cents or a few hundred dollars. Here are the things that make the difference.

Rarity tiers

Every card in a set carries a rarity: common, uncommon and rare at the base, then higher tiers such as double rares, ultra rares, illustration rares, special illustration rares and hyper rares in modern sets. Higher tiers turn up in fewer packs, so there are fewer copies in circulation. Each set's pull rates by tier are on the odds page, and the pack odds guide explains how to read them.

Illustration rares and special art

Full-art and illustration cards show the character in a scene that runs across the whole card. Collectors chase them for the artwork as much as the rarity, and a popular character drawn by a well-loved artist often outsells a rarer card with plainer art. Demand, not rarity alone, sets the price.

Print runs and set age

How many packs of a set were printed matters as much as the odds inside them. Older sets had smaller print runs, and most of their packs were opened long ago, so sealed product and clean copies get scarcer every year. Newer sets are printed in far larger numbers, which keeps most of their cards affordable while the top chase cards still command high prices. The vintage vs modern guide compares the eras with live prices.

Condition

Condition can move a price more than anything else. Collectors look at centering, corners, edges and the surface for scratches or whitening. A card straight from a sealed pack is usually near mint, and professionally graded copies in top condition can sell for many times the raw price. That is why we ship the best raw copy we can source, usually near mint.

Where a price comes from

The values on PackLab are live market prices for each card, refreshed from public market data. Prices move with demand, new reprints and tournament play, so a card's value today is a snapshot. You can see what cards sell for in the shop on the market, and browse the highest-value cards across every set in the most valuable cards list.
